FRIDAY FOURTEEN ISSUE 143

September 30, 2022
This week: Remembering Hilary Mantel through her innumerable words of wisdom, Megan Thee Stallion has launched a free mental health resources website and other celebs should take note, advice for what to do when your partner is your best friend but not the one you’ll marry, a spot-on portrayal of the type of person who says “why doesn’t anyone want to work anymore”, and more

Hilary Mantel’s rules for writing love letters, musings on mid-life, advice for what to do when you get stuck writing something and for when you think you’re facing a disaster, a thoughtful take on the princess myth, and notes on facts, history and the past. RIP

Jupiter is at its biggest and brightest this week, an event that won’t happen again for another 100 years. Here's how you can see it

In an effort to make mental health support more accessible to her fans, Megan Thee Stallion has created a website called Bad Bitches Have Bad Days Too, filled with free resources, support services and quotes that made us nod ("Some days I just hate everybody”)

Do you have a Josh?

If you’ve been butting heads with someone recently, this thoughtful piece on how to have better arguments has some very practical tips (scroll to the ‘key points’ section for the TLDR)

In tech news: Facebook is testing a subscription function for creators, TikTok is ramping up its content moderation (which may or may not be related to the fines they’re facing for not doing enough to protect children), Australian data security laws are set to change after the Optus data breach (also the details we have about the purported ‘hacker’ are very odd), Apple’s CEO has called out the lack of gender diversity in tech, AI-generated image platform Dall-E 2 is finally available to the public and major advertisers are pulling their Twitter ads after they were shown alongside some very unsavoury images

This week we swooned over Emma Chamberlain’s LA home (simultaneously crying cos she’s only 21), wished we had a cool $4m lying around to buy Aussie actor Sigrid Thornton’s North Melbourne terrace and bookmarked the green kitchen in this former London Bridge tannery

A powerful piece of writing about Gilmore Girls, and being mothered

Will you be watching Kenneth Branaugh portray Boris Johnston in Sky Atlantic/Binge’s new Covid-themed drama series This England or was living through it the first time enough for you

What to do when your partner is your best friend, but not the one you’ll marry

Lyz Lenz’ portrayal of people who say “why doesn’t anyone want to work anymore” made us laugh this week

This NYT piece about the new unauthorised biography about to be released about Anthony Bourdain’s life and death made us question the commodification of tragedy, and wonder why the public always needs to apply logic to celebrity trauma [“We never had that big story, that long piece that said what happened, how the guy with the best job in the world took his own life.”]

The sister of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims discusses her impact statement, and why she won’t be watching the Netflix series [“The reason why I said what I said during that impact statement was because, during the trial, they were portraying him as being so out of control he couldn't stop himself. But you have to be in control in order to do the things that he was doing. You have to very much be in control”]

Aaaaaand… Small and easy ways to feel better, Mariah Carey is releasing a secret 90s grunge album, we’re here for tinned fish date nights, every Logan Roy “Fu*k Off” from Succession, this kid is a genius, explaining 2000s British indie to a toddler, ever wondered what Nick Kroll smells like, this lovely mid-century marvel in Melbourne, how to put a designer off their food, another clever Ikea hack, we’re loving this new account showcasing retro fashion and architecture, R Kelly’s been ordered to pay for his crimes, huge news for anyone terrified of a meteor hitting Earth (👋), the Adam Levine text meme explained, Dizzee Rascal’s Bonkers but make it Liz Truss, this recipe is giving us Sunday vibes and RIP to the guest room

What we've been watching, cooking, listening to and reading this week...

Vanessa, content & strategy director

Reading: While waiting impatiently for Elizabeth Strout’s Lucy by the Sea to be released (October 5!) I've been ploughing through her three earlier (and less known) novels – Abide With Me, The Burgess Boys and Amy and Isabelle – and can highly recommend them all
Listening: Hilary Mantel’s Reith Lectures on the craft of writing fiction about the past. They are extremely worth your time
Watching: The Quiet Girl at the cinema tonight. The trailer looks wonderful

Hamish, content coordinator

Cooking: BA’s best bolognese, again. I’m staying with a friend in Sydney this weekend who shares my particular penchant for this specific recipe (it's worth the effort, I promise)
Reading: I’ve just started Why We Fight by economist and political scientist Christopher Blattman. It’s about the sociology behind conflict and I’m finding it fascinatingly grim
Eating: Seafood galore at Fish Shop in Bondi
